At 9.10am on Monday the recruitment agency informed Angela that theyâd so far had well over a thousand applications for the jobs, so we were both ever so glad that they were selecting suitable candidates and forwarding their CVs.
âJust imagine if weâd done it ourselves, Alan,â she said in the car.
âYes, weâd have inboxes like... like telephone directories,â I said, as my wit usually sharpens gradually throughout the day.
During the twenty-minute drive Angelaâs phone pinged constantly, each email being a single selected application.
âWaiter, waiter, receptionist, waitress, cook, chambermaid, waitress⦠oh, a male chambermaid, however you say that in English.â
âAre you sure he isnât a waiter?â I said, as the term for chambermaid is camarera de habitación, or room waitress.
âNo, heâs a camarero de habitación all right. Still, we mustnât be sexist. Whereâs Orihuela?â
âBetween Alicante and Murcia. Too far to travel every day, Iâm afraid.â
âYes, and I want local people. Oh, well. Hmm, Iâm not getting any applications for caretaker, maintenance man, gardener or chauffeur. I wonder why that is.â
âI think some of those people wonât be too hot on the computer.â
âHmm, Iâm sure weâll miss some good workers by only advertising online.â
I tapped my forehead. âBut you already have a caretaker, havenât you?â
âOh, that old man is just⦠well, letâs say heâs in charge of security or something. He wanted us to pay him in cash for keeping an eye on the place, so Iâll go on giving him his two hundred a month.â Her phone was still pinging away. âWaitress, receptionist, waiter⦠hmm, these people are on the ball, butââ
âLook!â I cried, unable to contain my excitement upon having one of my all too infrequent eureka moments.
âWhat? Thatâs Arturo, isnât it?â
âYes, heâs our man.â
âWhat for?â
âFor maintenance man, gardener, chauffeur and whatever else you want him to be. Arturoâs a true man for all seasons, unless you donât like the look of him.â
âOf course I do. Heâs quite handsome and somehow⦠exotic. Very charming too, but doesnât he like building work?â
âHe likes it well enough, but I have a feeling that he wonât be sad to part company with Cristóbal. They tolerate each other, but Arturoâs a free spirit and heâs a rather bossy boss. I can ask him if heâs interested if you like.â
âAll right, but later. Letâs get ready for our first manager interview.â
